FILM: CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL The Chicago International Film Festival (October 7–21) has been running annually since 1964. The 2010 fest includes over 100 feature films by directors from around the world, plus numerous shorts. If you don't mind subtitles, it's a sure bet for a post-race culture fix.
EAT OUT: EAT BREAKFAST AT THE BONGO ROOM SOUTH LOOP Need some tasty carbs in before racing or rooting for a racer? Hit the South Loop outpost of this Chicago favorite (its Wicker Park location is usually mobbed) for White Chocolate & Caramel Covered Pretzel Pancakes or the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. We guarantee you won't lack for ATP molecules.
MUSIC: DECIBELLE Decibelle, October 14–16, various locations around Chicago. Thursday, Friday 8 PM–2 AM; Saturday 6 PM–3 AM; $5–$20. Hit up this gay but straight-friendly music fest formerly known as Estrojam. The fete supplies tunes, including underground phenomenon Nola Sissy Bounce, along with workshops and panel discussions. Check the website for venue and workshop info.
SPORTS: THE CHICAGO FIRE Just mad about footie in this World Cup year, are you? Get your live fix. See the MLS (pro soccer) squad Chicago Fire take on archrival D.C. United at Toyota Park, Bridgeview, Illinois, Saturday, October 16, at 3 PM.
EAT OUT: LUNCH AT EPIC BURGER OR 17 WEST AT THE BERGHOFF
Chances are you are starving and wondering where to wander from Grant Park for a bite? Big "naturally raised beef" burgers and stellar shakes are the main attractions at much-loved recent addition to the area, Epic Burger. If it'’s too new school for you, head up to 17 West at the Berghoff for a period-piece interior, German beer and a corned-beef sandwich.
THEATER: TOO MUCH LIGHT MAKES THE BABY GO BLIND Running continually since 1988, the Neo-Futurists' signature show has become a rite of passage for adventurous theatergoers. The writer-performers' attempt to stage 30 mini-plays in 60 minutes is controlled chaos of the best kind, and with the ensemble members performing as themselves and new plays in the rotation every week, it's routinely the most topical show in town. Saturday, October 16, 11:30 PM.
