1st Annual Men's Health Urbanathlon™ & Festival Launches in New York City
On Sunday, October 1st, the inaugural Men's Health Urbanathlon & Festival took New York City by storm, as racers hit iconic city landmarks in a multi-discipline race that helped to raise funds and awareness for the Challenged Athletes Foundation and Shape Up NY.
Nearly 1,000 "urbanathletes" participated including competitors from all over the world, physically challenged athletes, Iraq war veterans and actor Dorian Missick from the ABC show "Six Degrees". "Urbanathletes" competed solo or as part of a three-person relay team as they scrambled through obstacles in Central Park, jumping over marine hurdles on the flight deck of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, scaling wall traverses at Chelsea Piers, climbing 52 flights of stairs at the new 7 World Trade Center (and down) and overcoming an eight-foot rope wall at Pier 54 before finishing the race.
- Following the race, participants and attendees enjoyed a free Festival at Pier 54 that included:
- Men's Health Village: Full recovery tent with first aid and reflexology
- Performance by America, Grammy® award-winning pop-rock band
- New York-based buzz bands Surefire, Stylofone, and Detroit's own The Rum Jars
- Gourmet food from 13 of the hottest Meatpacking District restaurants
- Break-dancers, a climbing wall, stunt bicyclist, graffiti artists
- Interactive activities hosted by sponsors Dodge Nitro, POWERade Option, and New Balance
Urbanathlete Testimonials "Thank you to all the staff at Men’s Health Urbanathlon. Y'all rock! The race was hard, fun, cool and different. It was a pleasant break from the norm, of just running a race. The party afterwards was GREAT. The art in action by Brian Olsen was AMAZING!!!" -Terence Gerchberg
"I've raced many triathlons and marathons, including those in NYC. I was looking for something different and the Men's Health Urbanathlon was it!" - Paul Martin, Challenged Athlete, CAF
"Thank you for your help in accommodating my cadets. I know a lot of us, more than just the 20 cadets in my company, participated in the event and we loved it. Everyone got out there in time and we were able to compete and encourage each other throughout the event. Each leg had different obstacles that we joked and talked about later on. In conclusion, I wanted to thank the Men’s Health Urbanathlon staff for pulling off a great race." -Bryan S. Fisher CDT LT, USCC
"I had a blast yesterday, and I look forward to doing the Men's Health Urbanathlon again next year!" - Michael Smyth
"Our team WEAKend Warriors would like to say thanks for organizing the Men's Health Urbanathlon. We had fun and will definitely sign up next year to win the COED relay title again." - Nardy Chung
