Good Things Will Happen
The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers launched the Men's Health Urbanathlon official training program this week. Called "Play," the 8-week program will feature games and outdoor activities, group and one-on-one competitions, obstacle courses, and full-body exercise routines. Go to www.chelseapiers.com/sc/mhu for full details.

On the Chelsea Pier sun deck (l to r): Bill Maik and Chris Skoglund, official "Play" trainers; Paul Martin, CAF athlete; and Jack Essig, vp/publisher, Men's Health.

Bringing together personal competition with the excitement of an urban "playing field," the Men's Health Urbanathlon & Festival (Sunday, October 1) is a first-of-its-kind signature race that incorporates iconic New York City landmarks. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and to Shape Up New York. CAF is a national charity that empowers physically challenged athletes worldwide by showing them what is possible and providing the funding needed to get them into the game. Shape Up New York is a New York City Parks & Recreation program dedicated to providing New Yorkers with accessible fitness-related activities.

Presenting sponsor for the event is the all-new 2007 Dodge Nitro. New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc., and POWERade OPTION are official sponsors. The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers is an event partner.

CAF athlete Paul Martin, pictured in photo, lost his right leg in a car accident 14 years ago, six months after finishing his college degree in mechanical engineering. The technician who fit him with his amazing leg challenged him to race in a national championship for track and field. He won it and "the fire was lit."

That was the beginning of his career as professional athletic and more recently inspirational speaker for kids as well. He also coaches triathletes (both physically challenged and not) via his web site, amplitudemultisport.com

Says Martin: "Every single day I run, someone beeps or gives me the thumbs up. Many people no longer see their back pain or their divorce or their whatever quite so limiting after they see me." That really pumps him up and continues to be one of the best things that's resulted from his accident.

The signature portion of Martin’s emails read: "Good Things Will Happen." When he got married last September; the placards on all his reception tables read: "Good Things Do Happen." His first child, Jack, was just born June 24, and come October, Martin will relish the idea of being the "primary caregiver." Good things really do.
