REGISTRATION

1. How much does it cost to register?
Prices start at $90 (Classic Distance) and $50 (Sprint Distance). Register early for our best available rates.

2. Can I register for more than one city?

3. Can I register for the Sprint in one city and the Classic in another city?

4. What if I cannot participate once I have registered?
All race participant purchases are final and entry fees will not be refunded. No exceptions will be made. If you are unable to participate, your free racer t-shirt will be available for pickup at anytime during scheduled packet pickup locations and hours, as well as on race day. Shipping is not available for your free racer t-shirt.

5. Can I transfer my registration to another person?
Registration transfers between participants are not allowed. To transfer to another city, please contact a race representative at 1-844- MHURBAN or Urbanathlon@rodale.com.

6. How do promotional codes work?
Promotional codes cannot be combined with any other discounts of any kind. Only one promotional code per person per registration is allowed. If you use a promotional code during registration (Student or Military discount), you must bring a corresponding form of ID (Student ID or Military ID) to Packet Pickup. Anyone unable to produce a valid for of ID for the applicable promotional code may be disqualified or required to pay Rodale Inc. the value of the promotional code. Promotional codes are available for use at the end of Early Bird Registration (April 30th, 2015).

7. I have a promotional code but forgot to enter it when I registered. Can I still use it?
All promotional codes must be entered at time of registration. Promotional codes not entered at time of registration will not be valid or redeemable, including for credit, adjustment, refund or otherwise. 

8. What is the upgrade package?
The upgrade package includes a Lululemon Long-Sleeve technical shirt and an upgrade to Wave 2.

9. I am injured and cannot run. Can I get a refund?
It is impossible for us to assess each injury on a case-by-case basis and therefore, we do not offer refunds when participants are injured and cannot participate. However, if you cannot attend a race and want to see if you qualify for a Race Transfer, please call 1-844- MHURBAN or email Urbanathlon@rodale.com to speak with a race representative.

10. Is the Chicago race still available?
This year, we’ve made the tough decision to go bi-coastal, with URBANATHLON events in New York and San Francisco.  While we will greatly miss being with you in Chicago, we would love to see you at one of these events.

We will be offering a 2015 registration discount in New York and San Francisco, available exclusively for past Chicago participants. Contact 1-844- MHURBAN  or Urbanathlon@rodale.com to learn more.

11. Can I run both the Classic and Sprint Distance in one-city?
Yes, if you want to run both the Classic and Sprint Distance race in one city, you can. Please note that all racers must start with their designated wave. Once the race start closes, participants will not be allowed to start. To do so, you will need to go through the registration process separately for each.

General

1. Is there an age requirement for participants?
All participants must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

2. Is there an age requirement for volunteers?
All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to participate. Please visit the Volunteer page to learn about our opportunities and to sign up to volunteer.

3. Can I run with an ipod/portable music device?
Ipods/portable music devices are strictly prohibited to ensure the safety of all participants.

4. Will there be a bag check?
Yes. All information regarding Gear Drop will be enclosed in racer packets. Please note that bags are not provided. Participants are required to bring a bag if they wish to leave a bag at bag drop.

5. Can women participate?
Yes, women are welcome to participate in any of the race distances. 

6. Will the URBANATHLON® be timed?
Yes, a timing chip is attached to the back of every participant’s bib. Chips are to be attached to racers’ shoes on race morning. Chips are disposable.

7. What if the event is cancelled?
The URBANATHLON® will take place rain or shine. Only force majeure will cancel the event. In the event of force majeure, there will be no refunds or credits applied to future events. Participants will be notified via email, website updates, and posts on all URBANATHLON® social media outlets.  

PACKET PICKUP

1. Where is packet pickup?
Packet pickup times and locations can be found on race city specific pages.

2. Can a friend pick up my packet for me?
Yes. If someone is picking up your packet for you, they MUST have a copy of your photo ID. Additionally, if you used a promotional code, the picking-up party MUST also have a copy of the appropriate promotional code ID (ex. Student or Military ID).

3. What is included in my packet?
Each participant will receive a race bib with an attached chip and a participant shirt. Finisher medals will be handed out at the Finish Line.

MERCHANDISE

1. Can I purchase URBANATHLON® merchandise online?
Yes. You can purchase merchandise during registration and through our SHOP prior to the event. Please note that we do NOT ship internationally. All merchandise will be shipped between 5 and 7 business days after the order is received. Please note all merchandise will be shipped starting June 1, 2015.

2. Can I purchase merchandise when I register?
Yes, you have the option to add merchandise to your transaction. All merchandise will be shipped between 5 and 7 business days after the order is received. Please note all merchandise will be shipped starting June 1, 2015.

3. Will merchandise be sold on race day?
Yes, merchandise will be sold at Packet Pickup and on race day. We accept credit card and cash.

4. I have not received my merchandise yet. Who do I contact?

COURSE AND OBSTACLE INFORMATION

1. How long is each course, and how many obstacles are in each course?

New York
  • Classic - 10.5 miles – 19 Obstacles*
  • Sprint - 4.1 Miles - 12 Obstacles*
San Francisco
  • Classic - 11.2 miles - 18 Obstacles*
  • Sprint - 3.8 miles - 8 Obstacles*

2. How are the distances calculated and do they include any obstacles?
Distances are calculated based on the running route for both the Sprint and Classic races. An additional 0.6 miles has been included to account for mileage in the Stair Climb obstacle.

3. Can I skip an obstacle?
All obstacles must be completed in order to continue the race. Participants who do not complete an obstacle will not be permitted to finish the race and will be issued a DNF. The only two obstacles that are exempt from this rule are Monkey Bars and Marine Hurdles. If you are unable to complete either of these two obstacles, you will be directed to the penalty zone to complete a series of exercises before you can move forward.

  • Monkey Bars: if you are unsuccessful on your first attempt, you are required to make a second attempt. If after two attempts you are unable to complete the obstacle, Race Staff will direct you to the Penalty Zone, where you will be required to complete 6 push-ups and 6 burpees before being permitted to continue.
  • Marine Hurdles: if you are unable to complete the obstacle, proceed to the penalty zone.

4. Are there bathrooms on course?
Yes, there are bathrooms at certain obstacles. Please see your city specific Course Map for exact locations.

5. Are there water stops on course?
Yes, there are hydration stations with water and sports drink at certain obstacles. Please see your city specific Course Map for exact locations.

6. How will the course be marked?
The course will be marked with traffic cones and arrows to direct runners in the right direction. There will also be bikers who will lead runners out on course to direct them in the right direction.

7. How are the obstacles incorporated into the race?
Arrows along the race course will direct you to the obstacle locations. All obstacles must be completed as you work your way through the race. Your finishing time will include the time it takes you to complete each obstacle.

WAVE START INFORMATION

1. How does the wave start work?
Men’s Health will assign entrants to waves prior to the event. Wave 1 is reserved for Elite racers and Wave 2 is reserved for URBANATHLETES that purchase an ‘Upgrade Package.’ (See ‘What is the upgrade package’). All waves including Wave 1 will be assigned based on the estimated pace per mile provided during registration. . While you cannot officially change your wave assignment, you may drop down to a slower wave should you wish to run with friends or a team.

2. How does the Elite Wave work?
Classic Distance: The Elite Wave, Wave 1, is open only to racers who have posted an acceptable “qualifying” half-marathon pace-per-mile time. Sign-up is on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to event director approval.

If you qualify and choose to compete in this wave:
  • You will be identified by a separate bib color
  • You will be the first wave to depart from the start
  • You will continue to be included and ranked within your age group
  • You will be eligible for overall race awards

Sprint Distance: The Elite Wave, Wave 1, is open only to racers who have posted an acceptable “qualifying” 5k  pace-per-mile time. Sign-up is on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to event director approval.

If you qualify and choose to compete in this wave:
  • You will be identified by a separate bib color
  • You will be the first wave to depart from the start
  • You will continue to be included and ranked within your age group
  • You will be eligible for overall race awards

3. How far apart are the waves?
There will be 3 minutes between each wave.

4. When should I line up with my wave?
Staging for the race start will begin 30 minutes prior to start. Participants will line up with their wave’s staging signs on a first-come, first-served basis.

FINISH FESTIVAL

1. Will there be food at the Finish?
All participants will receive pretzels and a banana when they finish. There will be additional food for purchase for participants and spectators.

2. Will there be beer?
Yes, participants and spectators 21 years of age or older are able to enjoy the beer garden. IDs will be checked before anyone is allowed to enter. Each participant will receive one free beer.

3. Is there an Awards Ceremony?
There will be an Awards Ceremony, honoring the Overall Male and Female winners, Fastest Stair Climb and Fastest Team for the Classic and Sprint Distance Races. The Fastest Team Awrd will be awarded to the team with the fastest average time in both the Sprint and Classic events. To qualify, a team must be composed of at least 4 entrants, including one member of the opposite sex. Age group medals will be distributed to Classic race distance participants only. The Classic Distance Awards Ceremony will take place at approximately 10:30AM, the Sprint Distance Awards Ceremony will take place at 11:30 AM. Subject to change.

4. What time does the Finish Festival end?
The Finish Festival will close at 2PM.
